1st Class in The Jewish American Experience with Professor Mark Raider
Today we talked about a petition to expel the Jews from New Amsterdam on Septermber 22, 1654. The christian colonist and the Deacon Church Officials wanted to expel the Jews because of the forthcoming harsh winter and lack of resources to endure it. Also the Christian Colonists freared that some of the Jews could not support themselves that they had nopersonal property or money to support themselves and therefore there was a fear that these Jews in specific could become a drain on the already depleating resources and weak colony. Then finally just as Eve succumbed to Satan and took a bite of the apple some feared that the Jews might convert other colonists into Jews practicing Judaism. The Jews were viewed as a deceitful race. Please do notice that these Christian Colonists have chosen a time of unrest to request that the Jews leave; moreover, throughtout history the Jews have been reapeatedly oppressed and expelled in times of social, political, and economic upheaval. This process where the majority take advantage of a low point to expel or suppress the Jews or any other minority is called scape goating.
The questions that arose from the above synopsis of the document we read was:
Why did the Jews come to the colony?
Was there any sustantiative evidence that the Jews had really taken advantage of the christian colonist through usury and deceitfulness?
Also they thought them Christ haters and killers did not want them to infect the new world with thier worship!
In April 26, 1655 the christian colonist replied that the Jewish Colonist owned too many shares in the company for the christians to buy them out. So, the Christians consented to let the Portugese Jews stay provided that they take care of their own people that were useless. Also, the christians forced the Jewish colonist to separate themselves into thier own nation and govern themselves.
It was brought up that the Jews even in Europe were a minority that were tolerated and set apart from the rest of the community and told to govern themselves. Jewish people on a whold thaver governed themslves. They were considered to be less of a citizen that than any other colonist. Mark mentioned Razon de etat, the Jews that were expelled in 1492 in Spain and the Jews that were expelled in 1497 from Portugal!

My Experience of Explorations in Jewish History
Dear Reader,
I am so glad that you have stumbled upon my blog spot. This is my Senior year as a History Student at the University of Cincinnati. I am really excited about the topic I will be studying for my senior seminar, which is The Jewish American Experience, including anti-semitism in America from Colonial times to present. Another class I am taking is called "Antisemitism". Moreover, in this blog spot I want to capture my experience and share with you what I learn in class; which might include a synopsis on my lecture notes and my thoughts about them or a book review of the books we are using for the classes.
My wish is that perhaps this will catch on and others that are taking or interested in Jewish History and I can find each other through the internet.
Regards,
Kimberly J. Koch
